Refugee English as a Second Language Program

Giving Hope a HandHope Community Center currently works with refugees coming to Charlottesville from multiple countries, including Myanmar (4 tribes: Kachin, Chin, Karen, Burmese), Bhutan, Thailand, Togo, Congo, Sudan, Libya, Burundi, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Russian, El Salvador and Mexico.

Our Objective is to help the refugees and immigrants in Charlottesville to overcome language barriers, get acclimated to the American system, and become self-sufficient and independent.

English as a Second Language Beginners Curriculum

  • 04/20 - 06/22/10 - English Basic Phonetics: Sound and Word; ABC
  • 05/29 - 08/31/10 - Building Your English Vocabulary 101
  • 09/07 - 10/26/10 - Beginner English Reading 101
  • 11/02 - 12/14/10 - Conversational English 101

English as a Second Language Intermediate

  • 03/30 - 05/25/10 - Beginner English Reading 201
  • 06/01 - 08/31/10 - Conversational English 201
  • 09/07 - 12/14/10 - Beginner English Reading & Writing 101
