Brief Background

Hope Community Center under other names has effectively worked with inner-city children for more than 20 years. In 1998 the current property on 11th Street NW was purchased. The neighborhood includes about 450 homes designated by federal and local governmental agencies as "targeted" for social and economic lift.

The community is pressed on two sides by powerful forces. Commerce is to the East. The University of Virginia is to the Southwest. Both are impinging.

At the present time only about 27% of residences are owned by occupants. Inflation of properties has more than doubled values of many homes in less than five years. Unemployment and many other social and economic issues greatly challenge the larger part of this neighborhood.

In October 2006, Hope Community Center opened its doors to 450 homes, offering a complimentary after school program and a summer camp. The children attending are receiving structured educational time and nutritional meals and snacks.
