| Mission Statement People in hard pressed areas need an advocate and a helping hand. Hope Community Center with excellent facilities, able staff, and an increasing number of volunteers is committed to being that helping hand to a better future for people in need. Mission Hope Community Center was originated and exists to offer social activities, classes, or seminars for people of all ages in distressed neighborhoods. Offerings include classes for teenage mothers, financial counseling, computer training, job fairs, police and safety academies, after school programs for students in need, GED classes, etc. Hope Community Center is a bold vision to touch a community of more than 450 homes. Many of these homes are in what is called a “targeted area” which means that government agencies have designated the area for social and economic lift. While the community struggles with transition, families with generational roots daily face social problems of drugs and other addictions, crime and unemployment. School records indicate that many of the children from this neighborhood perform academically on the lower end of the scale. Hope Community Center received its occupancy permit in November of 2006. Children are coming, bringing their books, asking for help, and expressing their desire to break through traditional barriers. On a given school day one may find children sitting at tables with paper and pencils or in the gym area joining with friends in playing games or basketball. Completion of the second building provided two of the finest community buildings in Charlottesville. Hope Community Center's goal is to serve a neighborhood, especially needy people. Hope Community Center has no desire to duplicate any service to needy people. Other agencies are being engaged in a strategic, collaborative plan to provide the very best encouragement to residents. The intent is to “Give Hope a Hand.” In late August Hope Community Center lead the way in cooperation with the city and other agencies to open up a fence that had divided the community for more than 50 years. Prior to construction, door to door surveying of 250 homes provided excellent data indicating what community residents would like. Facilities and programming are being designed and adapted to meet the expectations and needs of residents. Programming that will make a positive difference includes but is not limited to: community meetings, police academies, family reunions, financial counseling, adult education classes, extended school day programs for children, and birthday parties.
